Stockport is a town based in Greater Manchester and sits on elevated ground 6 miles south east of the city centre of Manchester. The town is also the largest settlement in the wider borough of Stockport, which has an estimated population of around 280,000 people living in the area.
Historically, Stockport is known for having the first mechanised silk factory in the British Isles and is also known for its’ cotton and allied industries, however, it is most famous for being the central town for the hatting industry at the turn of the 19th century. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has recently started an ambitious regeneration scheme, known as Future Stockport. The plan is to bring over 3,000 residents into the centre of the town, and revitalise its residential property and retail markets.
