Runcorn is an industrial town and cargo port that is within the borough of Halton – in the county of Cheshire. The town is on the southern bank of the River Mersey, where the estuary narrows to form Runcorn Gap. The population of the town is estimated to be approximately 60,000.
Runcorn was originally a small, isolated village until the start of the Industrial Revolution. It was a health resort in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A port began to develop on the south bank of the River Mersey towards the end of the 18th century.
