Hounslow is the principal town in the London Borough of Hounslow, which has an estimated population of around 240,000 people living in the area. The town is also a suburban development that forms a postcode in the TW postcode area.
The town was centred around Holy Trinity Priory founded in 1211. The priory developed the original small village into a town including regular markets and other facilities for travelers heading to and from London. The priory dissolved in 1539, however, despite this, the town remained an important staging post.

The 1838 construction of the Great Western Railway Line from London to Bristol seriously impacted the area. In 1842, the local paper was reporting that the ‘formerly flourishing village’, which used to stable 2,000 horses, was suffering a ‘general depreciation of property’.
When the Great West Road was built in the 1920s, it gave the town a new lease of life – developing it as an industrial area. These new factories were the town’s primary employer until their decline in the 1970s. In the next two decades afterward, offices replaced factories and Hounslow expanded to what it has become now.
