Blyth is a town and civil parish in southeast Northumberland – it lies on the coast, to the south of the River Blyth. The area has an estimated population of around 35,818.
The port of Blyth dates from the 12th century, though the modern town only developed in the first quarter of the 18th century. The main industries which helped the town prosper were ship building, coal mining, but salt trade, fishing and the railways also provided huge sources of income for the town.
These industries have largely ended, but the port still thrives today, mostly shipping paper and pulp from Scandinavia for the newspaper industries of England and Scotland. When the town’s principal industries went into decline, the whole area suffered until regeneration in the early 1990s.
As part of the revamp, the Keel Row Shopping Centre was opened in 1991 – it brought major retailers to Blyth and revitalised the town centre. Another area worked on was The Quayside, which has been transformed into a peaceful open space, with a sculpture depicting the town’s original industries as the centrepiece. The market place has also recently been re-developed extensively to attract investment into the town.
Blyth also has several renewable energy projects with two large wind farms – Blyth Harbour wind farm and Blyth Offshore wind farm. The town is also home to non-league side Blyth Spartans, famous for their 1978 “giant killing” results in the FA Cup.
